THIS IS MY BODY
Family Devotionals | Sundays in Lent
Every Sunday in Lent we will explore how Jesus lived in his body on earth and invites us to take care of —and embrace the goodness of—our own bodies. Each week our Gospel will highlight a different story from Jesus’ life and connect it to shared human experiences—like growing up, taking naps, or drinking water. By engaging with these stories through a broad lens of embodiment, This is My Body seeks to inspire curiosity, wonder, and awe in all ages. This Lent devotional is available for families as a downloadable resource (below), and printed copies will be available upon request.
We are utilizing resources from Illustrated Ministry, which are written for all ages. We believe you’ll find appropriate questions and discussion topics in each devotional for your children and yourself no matter the age. At the same time, feel free to tweak content and questions to work for your family. You don’t need to do all the activities for it to be a meaningful experience. Take a look at the devotionals, see what you think will work best for your family’s schedule, and find time each week to gather together.

Meet people who have fled their homelands. Hagar. Joseph. Ruth. Jesus. Here is a riveting story of seeking safety in another land. Here is a gripping journey of loss, alienation, and belonging. In The God Who Sees, immigration advocate Karen Gonzalez recounts her family’s migration from the instability of Guatemala to making a new life in Los Angeles and the suburbs of south Florida. In the midst of language barriers, cultural misunderstandings, and the tremendous pressure to assimilate, Gonzalez encounters Christ through a campus ministry program and begins to follow him. Here, too, is the sweeping epic of immigrants and refugees in Scripture. |
FIRST COMMUNION | Food & Faith Learning
Wednesday, March 29 | 6:30pm | Christ the River of Life
Talk to Pastor Jen to get your names on our First Communion prayers for Maundy Thursday.
Celebration of communion for those who are receiving for the first time or those who already receive are invited to learn more about this sacred meal. During our Lenten Wednesday time we will explore through tangible ways a renewed understanding of why we come to the table and what it means. Join to taste and see and maybe even bake as we prepare to come to Jesus’ table. During our Maundy Thursday Service, April 6th at 7:00 pm (6:00 pm dinner offered before) at Salem Lutheran Church we will receive communion and mark this faith milestone in our journey. Welcoming the children of God to share in Holy Communion is part of our Baptismal promise! |
We acknowledge young children are capable of understanding what it means to be part of a family and share a meal together. We teach children that Holy Communion (Lord’s Supper, Eucharist) is from God and it is something that we receive together. The body and blood of Christ “for you” includes all who come to the table. We trust that as children grow in years, their understanding of the mysterious gift of the sacrament of Holy Communion will grow with them, through their elementary, tween, teen, and into adulthood. This gift of forgiveness, new life, and salvation is one that we want to give out as liberally as we can, and that all are welcome at the table. Children of all ages are welcome at the Table!
