CONGRATULATIONS to MENZI! // Menzi Nkambule, who has been an active part of the Redeemer community since his arrival at Luther Seminary several years back, and who preached for us on July 10th, has accepted a call to be the settled pastor for St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Jersey City, New Jersey. Menzi preached at St. Matthew’s and met with their congregation on Sunday, July 31st. The following week he flew back to the Twin Cities and then drove (with his possessions) back to Jersey City.  He officially started work on August 1st. St. Matthew’s council president describes their congregation as “small but mighty,” and they are known for spearheading a food pantry that serves some 500 families a week. Redeemer is grateful for all we have learned and received from Menzi, and for whatever we may have been able to contribute to his growth toward service in the wider Church. Let us rejoice in his call!

LECTIONARY READINGS:
Isaiah 58:9b-14 | Psalm 103:1-8 | Hebrews 12:18-29
GOSPEL TEXT: Luke 13:10-17

Trusting in God’s extraordinary love, let us come near to the Holy One in prayer.

 ~ pause for reflection ~

You crown your church with steadfast love and mercy. Guide us continually in our baptismal covenant to strive for justice and peace in all the earth. Use our diverse gifts in service to the whole people of God. God in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

You satisfy the needs of all creatures. Protect the habitats of fish and birds, our lakes, rivers, and waterways including Theo Wirth Park and the Eloise Butler garden. Repair ecosystems damaged by misuse, neglect, or natural disaster, that all creation may thrive. Provide rains where there is drought and food where there is famine. God in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

You make your ways known to all people. Inspire the rulers and leaders of nations with your compassion and mercy. Raise up activists and community organizers to restore places affected by violence, poverty, and inequality. God in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

You provide justice for all who are oppressed and relief to all who are afflicted. Heal those who are bent over by addiction, depression, and anxiety. Set free all who cry out under the weight of mental, emotional, or physical distress, especially Mary Lou Williams, recovering from surgery; Claudia Runnels, recovering from surgery; Carlos Garces, recovering from neck surgery; Bill Viebahn, member, with late stage lung cancer; Mike Murray, in cancer treatment Mary Sue Barber, daughter of Shelby Andress, whose cancer has returned and is worsening. We pray For those who suffer from long COVID, and other effects of the pandemic For those suffering from mental illness For caregivers everywhere in their care for the sick and mentally ill. For the imprisoned who long for hope.. God in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

You call us to delight in the sabbath. Renew our bodies, minds, and spirits in this worshiping assembly. Give rest to all who lead our congregation in worship, study, and service, especially our musicians, council, and pastor Jen Collins. God in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

You raise new life among us. We praise you for the healthy birth of Miriam Rae Gilbert Hoyles on August 11th to Kristin Gilbert and Kristen Hoyles. Give the mothers rest as they care for their precious newborn, and inspire their community here to rally around them now.  God in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Generations bless your holy name. We give you thanks for the communion of saints who have gathered in prayer and praise in this place. Support us in your love until we rest forever in you. God in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Receive the prayers of your children, merciful God, and hold us forever in your steadfast love; through Jesus Christ, our holy Wisdom.
Amen.
